Although they can now be found in many drugstores, period panties remains an open question for many: How safe is it really? How comfortable is it to wear? And: Does it also work on heavy days?
I tested eight models for SZ Magazine. Under everyday conditions, not in a laboratory. The aim was to find out which products deliver what they promise and what to look out for before buying.

Period panties: What was tested and how?
The focus was on period panties from various brands, including Taynie, Snuggs, The Female Company, and others.
The tests were carried out on different days of the cycle, at different times of the day, while out and about, and while lying down.
The following factors were evaluated for period panties:
Comfort
Leak protection
Absorbency
Washability
Workmanship and feel of the material
Important: The aim was not to crown a product as the “test winner,” but to work out what works well in everyday life and where there are limitations.
What really matters in period panties
What sounds good in theory often reveals weaknesses in practice:
Some panties felt damp after several hours, even though the absorbency should have been sufficient according to the manufacturer's specifications.
Others impressed with a good fit, discreet design, and a secure feeling, even at night or during heavier bleeding.
There were differences in washability: not all products can be washed at 60 degrees, which can be problematic from a hygiene perspective.
The models tested also varied widely in price. Surprisingly, a high price did not automatically mean better quality.
What to look for when buying period panties
Period panties can be a great alternative to tampons or pads if it suits your body and your everyday life. These questions will help you choose:
Which days of your cycle do you need it for? Not every pair of underwear is suitable for every level of flow.
How important is it to you that they can be washed at 60°C? For many, this is a crucial point when it comes to hygiene.
What is your everyday life like? If you are on the go a lot or cannot change for long periods of time, you need more security than someone who works from home and has a bathroom within reach.
How do the panties fit? Comfort is a must if you want to rely on them all day long.
My conclusion on period panties
Period panties works, but not every style works for every woman. It's worth trying out different cuts, absorbency levels, and materials. Especially if you want to cover most of your bleeding days, you probably won't be happy with just one style.
